DeSoto House

The DeSoto House Hotel is the anchor for Galena's Main Street. The oldest operating hotel in the state of Illinois, when the DeSoto opened in 1855 it was said to be the largest hotel in the Midwest.

If you get the chance to stay in the DeSoto House, you will be joining a long list of historic travelers like Abraham Lincoln, Tom Thumb, and Samuel Clemens. Ulysses S Grant used the hotel as his campaign headquarters, and is reported to have learned of his victory in the 1868 election from his room at the DeSoto.
